From steep hiking and panoramic views to hidden gems (as the tiny chapel near Padina village), driving only 1-2 hours from Varna can take you to wonderful places. This guide has been limited to maximum 1-2 hours driving in each direction, so a day trip (without a sleepover) would be feasible.

Day trips West of Varna
1. The Stone Forest
Drive from Varna: 20 min.
Entrance fee: 3 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
The Stone Forest is a very lovely day trip from Varna, especially if you’re not from around here. For us, Bulgarians, it’s very significant, since it’s the only desert in Bulgaria. It’s not too clear how these peculiar rocks have been formed and scientists have many curious theories. The most popular opinion, though, claims that this used to be a sea bottom thousands of years ago.
Once you enter the Stone Forest, there is a small building to your right where you need to pay your entrance fee. It’s just 3 BGN and you’ll also get a small booklet with the names of some of the most prominent rocks.
2. Ovech Fortress
Drive from Varna: 45 min.
Entrance fee: 2 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 h 30 min.
Ovech’s old name is “Provat”, which is a reference to the name of the nearby city – Provadia. It’s one of the things to do near Varna with the most beautiful views. But don’t go there just for the views. Once you’re up to the fortress, you can “talk” to the 80-meter deep well, stroll along the devil’s path and take a peak inside the knight’s prison. Afterwards, I suggest you go to the Historical museum in Provadia and find out even more curious facts about both the fortress and the area itself.
3. The Salt mine near Provadia
Drive from Varna: 45 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 1 hour
The salt mine near Provadia is open only once a year (usually in September). I managed to visit it in 2019 – there usually let in groups of around 40 people, but I suggest that you check whether you need to claim your spot beforehand (as it’s different each year). You should follow their Facebook page for more news. But why is it so special?
Well, the mound itself was found in 2005 and there are no similar sights in all of the history of Europe! Archeologists have been working on uncovering its secrets, little by little, for over 15 years. It is believed that the settlement was created around 5600 BC which makes it the oldest settlement in Europe. During the era of the salt, you wouldn’t be able to buy anything with gold – salt was the most expensive treasure. This is why you’ll see that the mound has 3 difference defence systems.
If you decide to visit this amazing thing to do near Varna, you’ll do so with a guide. The archeologists themselves are also there and each one of them will tell you about all curious details they have found. Unfortunately, as it often happens in Bulgaria, the financing is not sufficient to go faster with the excavation, but hopefully, the more interest there is in this place, the faster we’ll uncover its secrets!
4. The Chapel in Padina village
Drive from Varna: 40 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
The small but pretty chapel in Padina village is a true hidden gem – totally worth seeing on a day trip from Varna. You won’t see many people there, but that’s one of the things that makes it so special. If you have a 4×4 or a SUV, you’ll be able to go up to the hill where it’s located. But you can also hike up, it’s not hard to get to and it’s only about a 10-minute walk. The view from above is quite spectacular, especially when the nearby dam is full.
5. Petrich Kale
Drive from Varna: 45 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 2 hours
Petrich Kale is another lovely place for a day trip from Varna. It’s also a bit of a hidden gem and not too popular, but the panoramic views from above will take your breath away! There are two main paths to go up and both of them start at the water fountain of Razdelna village (take the GPS coordinates and follow them, that’s your best bet). The one on the right of the water fountain takes more time, but it’s easier. The one on left of the water fountain will take you about 20-30 minutes going up but it’s a bit steeper. Follow the blue sign that is about 30-40 meters to the left in order to start your hike.
6. The Wonderful Rocks
Drive from Varna: 1 h 15 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
The exceptionally beautiful rock formations to the West of Varna are over 1 hour away, but totally worth the trip. They’re right next to one of the main roads in the area and you’ll often see other people that have stopped their cars just to take a better peak. The rocks are about 40-50 meters high and there are 3 tunnels you can go through. And if you don’t choose to go in the driest possible time of the year (mid to end August) as in the photo above, you’ll see the pretty water reflections on Tsonevo dam.
If you’re a climber, this is one of the best places in Bulgaria where you can practice! There are about 18 climbing paths, each with a different difficulty, and the views you’ll see from above are so gorgeous.
7. The Three Kai (Trite Kai) – Uchkaya, Ortakaya, Kodzha Kaya
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 4-5 hours

The hiking route for “Trite kai” (the three peaks) is about 10-12 km long and starts at Bilka village. Once you’re in the village, find the cemetery and you’ll see the forest paths. You can only see two of the peaks, though, there are several circular paths. Kodzha Kaya is the hardest to conquer, as you might even need to climb a little bit on the rocks. The views here have an unmatched beauty and each of the peaks has a 360 panoramic view. You need to follow the signs and the yellow trail in order to go around. And once you’re back to the village center – find the woman named Emine – she makes the best “strandzhanka” you’ll ever taster (it’s a toast with mean – totally delicious!).
This is also the place where the first ultramarathon in Bulgaria that is fully autonomic – Kodzha Kaya Ultra. For the bravest of you looking for a more extreme day trip from Varna – check out their website.
8. Historical Park
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Entrance fee: 30 BGN
Typical visit time: 3-4 hours
The Historical Park is one of the most wonderful things to see near Varna! 💜 Once you’re there, I highly recommend that you get a guide from the park – they will tell you in details about every region and every little house, you will surely learn curious new facts. Everything in the park has been constructed as authentic as possible – the Thracian temple in the photo is made of real marble! The paints used for the Neolithic houses are all natural and with materials that have probably been used in that era. The Thracian Palace with all of its rooms and even treasure replicas will take your breath away! 💜 You can currently also see the Proto Bulgarian village with its authentic huts, while the Second Bulgarian Kingdom is still being constructed. I’m also very excited for the other planned areas – the First Bulgarian Kingdom and the Roman era!
9. Pliska
Drive from Varna: 50 min.
Entrance fee: 5 BGN
Typical visit time: 45 min.
We can’t miss the first Bulgarian capital on our list of day trips from Varna, can we? 😊 Pliska was a capital for over 200 years and at first there were wooden houses and and a fortified wall. Later on, the wooden houses were replaced by stone ones. You can also see remains of the Large Basilica – a symbol of when Christianity was accepted here in 864. The reconstructed Large Basilica is just a bit up the street – outside of the walls. It’s still undergoing renovations, so it gets more and more impressive every season!
10. Madara
Drive from Varna: 1 hour
Entrance fee: 5 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
The Madara Rider is perhaps one of the most recognised things to see near Varna. The area around Madara, however, has been populated for quite a few millennia – you can see Roman remains (the Roman villa), rock monastery (due to the numerous natural caves around here) and the small but still functional chapel St Pantaleon. The Madara National Historical and Archaeological Reserve holds an archeological museum as well, where you can see many curious ancient objects.
11. Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument near Shumen
Drive from Varna: 1 hour
Entrance fee: 4 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
If you’ve been to Varna but still haven’t visited the monument near Shumen, you’ve probably at least seen photos of how extremely impressive it is. But seeing photos can’t do it justice – it has been build in such a way, that seeing it at different parts of the day will bring you different emotions. The monument describes part of Bulgarian history during the ages and it does look a bit peculiar – the reason for that is that a futuristic style has been combined with old Bulgarian stone-building practices. Another curious fact is that you can find the largest open-air triptych mosaic in Europe here!
12. Preslav
Drive from Varna: 1 h 15 min.
Entrance fee: 6 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
After you’ve compelted your journey through the first Bulgarian capital – visit the second – Preslav! We, Bulgarians, even call it “Great Preslav”, as it was used as a capital city during the golden era of Bulgarian history, when Bulgaria used to have borders on 3 different seas. The best place in the complex is naturally occupied by the Large Palace (and throne room) and the Small Palace. I highly recommend that you get an audio guide (6 BGN more) as the secrets this place holds are many and curious ones.
Day trips North of Varna
13. Ecopark Geranea
Drive from Varna: 45 min
Entrance fee: 24 BGN
Typical visit time: 3 hours
The Geranea Ecopark is close to the city of Obrochishte and it’s a home for many animals – deer, boars and goats. You can watch these animals from one of the 7 specially constructed towers. If you’d like to hike around the park, bear in mind that the hikes are only with a guide – you need to book a spot beforehand. The visiting hours are 7:00, 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00 o’clock. For more information and reservations, check out their website or send them an e-mail at office@ecopark-geranea.com .
14. The Palace of Balchik
Drive from Varna: 50 min.
Entrance fee: 14 BGN (8 BGN + 6 BGN)
Typical visit time: 1 h 30 min.
The Palace and Botanical gardens of Balchik is a really great day trip from Varna – especially if you catch the gardens’ full bloom during summer or late spring. You’ll find so many beautiful things here – not just over 2000 species of plants and cacti, but also: the throne (where you can’t miss a photo opportunity), the alley of wine (where you should stop for a sip), the bridge of sighs (where you should stop and sigh!) and the hanging terraces (where you’ll often see weddings).
Bear in mind that you need to pay two separate entrance fees at two separate booths at the entrance – one for the Palace and one for the Botanical garden itself.
15. Kavarna
Drive from Varna: 1 hour
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 1 hour
Kavarna is definitely not as pretty as it used to be – the city has been neglected for the past few years, but if you’re in the area, it’s still worth visiting. You’ll find a great restaurant here – The Old Bridge, which is right above the water, as well as one of my favorite panoramic views along the Black Sea coast – the one near hotel Calithea (which is on the photo above). The cute beach right next to Villa Alegra is never full and is really cute!
16. Cape Kaliakra
Drive from Varna: 1 h 15 min.
Entrance fee: 3 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
We can’t miss the spectacular Cape Kaliakra on a day trip from Varna, can we? 😊 Just this summer (2020) I came here twice and I’ll admit that this is one of my favorite spots on the list. Apart from the curious legends that surround its history, you’ll also find ruins of a Roman settlement as well as even Roman thermae. And these views… these views! I promise you, it’s so beautiful that you’ll easily see why I go back there again and again.
17. Yailata
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: 3 BGN
Typical visit time: 2 hours
If you want to go around the whole Yailata reserve, you’ll need about 2 hours. I also suggest that you don’t do it at noon during the summer months as there are little places to hide from the scalding sun. There are really a lot of things you can explore around here! Starting from the over 100 caves in the area, passing by the rock church “St. St. Constantine and Helena” and a few rock monasteries, check out the necropoli and finally the early Byzantine fort. It’s a wonderful way to go back in time! And if you decide to visit it during the month of May, you can enjoy the numerous wild peonies in the area – they’re an absolute dream.
18. Kamen Bryag (Rocky Coast)
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
In order to see Kamen Bryag in its full glory, visit it for July morning (July 1st) or on the town’s official holiday (July 3rd). There will be a lot of people and many activities you can take advantage of. Kamen Bryag is extremely photogenic (for night photography too!) and the small firepit (“ogyncheto”) hasn’t been put out for dozens of years (apart from super heavy rains or extreme winds, but even these put it out for only a little while).
19. The Arch of Tyulenovo
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
The Arch of Tyulenovo is an amazing natural thing to see near Varna and it’s almost always full of people – especially during the summer. Luckily, unlike the similar arch in Malta, our version of it has stood the test of time. I still suggest that you are careful – not just near the arch but near Kamen Bryag as well, since the coast is really steep. You’ll often see fisherman in the area, as well as rock-climbing enthusiasts. Take a look on the right side of the arch – you’ll see “The Loner” rock, which will remind you of similar (but larger) ones in Thailand!
20. The Shabla lighthouse
Drive from Varna: 1 h 15 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 15 min.
According to some sources, the Shabla Lighthouse is the oldest one in Europe. Well, even if there is a discussion about this, it’s still the oldest on the Balkan peninsula and it’s still the Easternmost point in Bulgaria. This important thing to see near Varna is an important one for the area – as I mentioned, the coasts are pretty rocky, so pretty dangerous for the passing ships. After you see the lighthouse, you can also visit the protected area of Shabla lake which is a very popular spot for bird watching.
21. The Durankulak lake
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
Whew, we’re at the Northernmost point of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast – the city of Durankulak! The area is not too popular, but it’s extremely important for our country’s ecosystem – there are many endangered species of plants and birds here. However, the Durankulak mound near the lake holds other secrets – it’s the largest archeological area in the Dobrudzha region, and remains have been found here that are about 8000 years old! In order to get to the lake, find the Archeological complex Durankulak lake, as there are other points on the map that won’t take you to the right place. The last kilometre involves a dirt road, but you can leave your car near the restaurant and walk about 10 minutes to get there.
Are you looking for even more information about the area? Check out myst post on things to see along the North Coast which includes some amazing beaches as well!
Day trips South of Varna
22. The Ancient Fort of Byala
Drive from Varna: 45 min.
Entrance fee: 5 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
You might have heard that the town of Byala produces one of the most delicious Bulgarian wines – Dimyat. But did you know that there has been wine production in the area for quite a while? Well, the Ancient Fort holds the oldest antique winery in Bulgaria! The archeological complex is quite impressive not because of its size (it’s actually not large at all), but because of the fact that remains from different ancient periods have been found here. And the sea views from high above are quite spectacular!
23. Obzor
Drive from Varna: 1 hour
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 1 hour
If you’re headed to the South Coast on your day trip from Varna, Obzor is a great place for a stopover for a bite or even for some time at the beach. Its center has been renovated in the past few years – you’ll see the cute pencil benches, the lovely church, the Antique theare, as well as the statues of Neptune and the Roman.
24. Cape Emine
Drive from Varna: 1 h 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
If you’ve already been to the Easternmost point of Bulgaria – cape Shabla, you must, too, go to cape Emine – it’s the Easternmost point of the Balkan mountain! This wonderful thing to see near Varna is very dear to many serious hikers, especially the ones going the route between Kom peak and cape Emine (it takes over 2 weeks!).
Bear in mind that part of Cape Emine is a military zone, so don’t get too close to the fences. In addition, if you’d like to get as close as possible, take a 4×4 vehicle – the road is pretty bad for the last 30 minutes of your trip there.
25. Nesebar’s Old Town
Drive from Varna: 1 h 45 min.
Entrance fee: 3-6 BGN
Typical visit time: 2 hours
The Old town of Nesebar is another favorite thing to see near Varna for me. The immense beauty of the remains from the Roman era right at the edge of the sea is something you can never get enough of. There are 6 churches in Nesebar (and you can enter each of them for 3 BGN), as well as an Archeological and an Ethnographic museum (6 BGN entrance fee).
If you’ve never been to Nesebar before, I have two recommendations for you guys. First off, leave your car at the paid parking near the entrance – trust me, you don’t want your car to get towed because you’ve parked illegally. Secondly, try to go early, early in the morning – the town looks completely different without the crowds!
26. The Ancient domed tomb in Pomorie
Drive from Varna: 1 h 45 min.
Entrance fee: 2 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
If you haven’t been convinced yet of the numerous treasures Bulgaria hides, then the Ancient domed tomb in Pomorie will certainly help this cause. It is the only one on the Balkan peninsula and its architecture is so unique, that even to this day, archeologists are trying to uncover its deepest secrets. The tomb was built in 2-3rd centuries BC, and just for 3 BGN more you can get a guide to tell you more about it (it’s only available in Bulgarian and Russian, though).
Day trips near Varna
27. Aladzha Monastery
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Entrance fee: 5 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
The peculiar name of this rock monastery comes from Persian/Arabic and means “colorful”. It’s one of the most popular things to see near Varna and for a reason. Built in the 13-14th centuries, the monastery gave shelter to hermit monks. Aladzha monastery has a few different floors and sometimes on a summer evening, you can even catch a great light show!
After you’ve explored its main part, I recommend that you take the little path to the left of the entrance (next to the museum) and walk about 10 minutes on it. You’ll reach a necropolis to your right which is so, so gorgeous and not that popular (even I, as a local, discovered it on just my last visit!).
28. Euxinograde
Drive from Varna: 15 min.
Entrance fee: 12 BGN
Typical visit time: 1 hour
The residence of Euxinograde is a perfect thing to see near Varna. It wasn’t always called Euxinograde, though. At first it was called “Sandrovo” (after Alexander Batenberg), but his wife later asks him to change it. She loved the Black Sea so much, that she wanted the residence to be known as Euxinograde (which means “hospitable sea”). Nowadays the residence is only used for imporant national events, but it also sometimes hosts weddings.
In order to visit the palace, you need to book a date and time beforehand – send an e-mail at Euxinograde@government.bg and bear in mind the standard visiting times: 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00. During your visit, a guide will take you all around the area and will tell you curious facts about it and its lovely gardens. However, you can also book a stay at one of the houses inside the complex and enjoy the palace for even longer!
29. The Botanical garden (Ecopark)
Drive from Varna: 15 min.
Entrance fee: 4 BGN
Typical visit time: 2 hours
The University Botanical Garden was the first ecopark built in Bulgaria. There are many exotic plants, as well as weeds, bushes and even cacti. The gardens are also famous for their huge rosarium (especially gorgeous in June), as well as their collection of irises. The area is quite large and hides many curiosities for you to explore: the Roman villa and Roman tomb, as well as a small chapel. Luckily, you’ll see many signs guiding you around the different paths, so you’ll have a very hard time getting lost. You should also bring a picnic bag and enjoy some delicious food after your long walk around.
30. The Monastery St. St. Constantine and Helena
Drive from Varna: 15 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 30 min.
The small monastery is actually the reason why the resort St. St. Constantine and Helena was named this way. You can find holy remains from St. Valentine here! Archeologists believe that the monastery was built between the 14th and 16th centuries, and legends say that the water here is miraculous. Even today, visiting the monastery, people will tell you that drinking from that water and bowing to the icon of St. Valentines, you’ll be living anew. As this is a holy place, please mind your clothes, and don’t take photos inside – it’s forbidden.
31. National park “Golden Sands”
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Entrance fee: free
Typical visit time: 2 hours
Even though this is the smallest of Bulgaria’s 11 national parks, it’s still almost 10 km long. If you find yourself near Varna in the summer, it’s a perfect opportunity to escape the summer heat and walk around nature. There are 5 main hiking routes and there is even one suitable for children. Check out this post on the National park for more information.

32. Magic Spring Complex
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
“The Magic Spring” complex is located in the city of Devnya and it’s called “magic” not just because of the legends that surround it, but because of its beauty. The restaurant “Magic Spring” is right next to the spring itself, so you can enjoy it while trying different delicious Bulgarian dishes.
33. Eco-complex Sherba
Drive from Varna: 1 час
Sherba is a complex deeply immersed into the woods of Grozdyovo village. This spot is pretty popular for weddings! The place is super photogenic, so don’t forget your camera! Just take a look at their website’s gallery.
36. Villa Marciana
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Villa Marciana is a great fit for you if you’re dreaming to spend some time in a luxurious spot with gardens fit for a royal. Its name comes from Devnya’s old name – Marcianopolis, named after emperor Trayan’s sister. It’s located in Padina village and it’s located in the building of the old school (the chapel I mentioned above is really close by!). Villa Marciana is famous for its gourmet menu, but bear in mind that the prices are pretty steep. You should also call ahead for a reservation, since they often host different events (like weddings) where no other people can go in. Check out the beauty of the place on their website!
37. Ethnographic complex Kalimanski Han
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Apart from the extremely delicious Bulgarian cuisine you can try at Kalimanski Han, this place is just a bit different from the others on this list due to the numerous activites available. From a carriage trip to a helicopter flight, you can find almost anything around here to escape the mundane city life. The summer garden is really great and you’ll even see a few rabbits roaming freely around you. There are also a few spots in the guest house, so you can even stay over after you’ve done a wine degustation at the complex’s wine cellar.
38. Complex Barite
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Barite is definitely one of the most famous ethnographic complexes on the list and there are a few reasons why. And no, I’m not talking about the ridiculously delicious homemade bread they have. Okay, well, that too! 😁 But there are 3 fishing pools that were created (read the legend about them here), a hiking trail (which I can’t wait to explore, as I just found out about it while researching for this post!), a paintball field, billiards and of course – a children’s playground. The whole complex has been created in a Bulgarian revival style and you’ll see their great attention to detail. There are rooms to stay over if you’d like to spend more time around nature.
39. The 3 Mills complex (Trite Vodenitsi)
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
This complex has been renovated while attempting to preserve the authentic style of the mills near Batova river. Despite the fact that its hotel property is small, it’s still a lovely place to grab a bite, relax and escape from the noise of the city. The extremely photogenic landscape and century-old trees make the place even more magical!
40. Eco Complex Springs (Izvori)
Drive from Varna: 30 min.
Eco complex Izvori is one of the spots on this list of things to do near Varna with the largest area. In addition, you can find a large array of activities here, one of the most curious of which is the mountain bike riding. The complex has a lovely SPA zone, as well as two restaurants – a summer and a winter one. There are also a few hiking trails in order to make your stay even more enjoyable. Check out the website of Izvori complex to find out more.
41. Vayatsite Complex
Drive from Varna: 30 min.

Ethnocomplex Krivini is a true hidden gem – not many people know about it. But it’s a very curious one – it is a replica of a typical Bulgarian street during the revival.
